As temperatures rise across the UK, The Salvation Army's Bramwell House in Blackburn has opened its doors to offer vital support to the local homeless community. The Lifehouse (hostel) is providing a cool, safe haven during the current heatwave, ensuring vulnerable individuals have access to essential resources.
In partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Council, Bramwell House has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP). This initiative is crucial during extreme temperatures, aiming to prevent harm and offer life-saving support to those sleeping rough. The protocol is triggered when temperatures reach dangerous levels, providing emergency shelter and preventing serious health risks associated with heat exposure.

The centre is offering much more than just shelter. Visitors can enjoy cold refreshments, access showers, and find a welcoming space to escape the heat. Colin Mottershead, service manager at Bramwell House, emphasised the importance of this provision: “Whilst everyone else is enjoying the sunny weather we will be offering a space for people to come into and stay cool and hydrated enjoying cold refreshments and a listening ear if they wish. For us, it's about providing a friendly and welcoming space protecting all vulnerable people that live within our community.”
